NatHERS Assessment – Professional Compliance for Aussie Homes

A NatHERS Assessment is the essential next step for achieving energy efficiency and compliance in new builds, renovations, and upgrades. At Home Energy Rating Australia, our accredited assessors follow national standards to deliver precise, 10-star thermal ratings and actionable recommendations.

Why Is This Assessment Critical?

  • Ensures Compliance: Meets the latest National Construction Code (NCC) and allows progress on building permits.
  • Maximises Comfort and Savings: Highlights design strengths and weaknesses, helping you improve living conditions and reduce outgoings.
  • Provides Trusted Documentation: The NatHERS Certificate is required for council and finance approvals, home sales, and green upgrade rebates.

What’s Included in a NatHERS Assessment?

Your NatHERS assessment covers the full spectrum of building factors that impact energy performance and compliance:

Climate, Terrain, Exposure & Orientation
  • Climate Zone: Every home is assigned a specific climate zone based on its postcode, which reflects local temperature, humidity, and weather patterns. Assessors use the principal zone and may justify alternatives if local topography demands.
  • Terrain & Exposure: The terrain category is determined by the surrounding environment (exposed farmland, suburban streets, protected city areas), impacting wind, sun exposure, and thermal load.
  • Orientation: The direction the dwelling faces relative to true north affects solar gain, natural heating, and cooling requirements. Assessors use true north for accuracy, factoring in how the building sits on the site.
Zoning
  • The home is divided into “zones” (e.g., kitchen/living, bedrooms, day/night areas), each with specific thermal and usage profiles. Zones are assigned based on their function and heating/cooling needs, with both conditioned (artificially heated/cooled) and unconditioned spaces modelled.
  • Minimum zoning rules apply: Every dwelling must contain at least one main kitchen/living zone and a minimum of three zones (excluding garages).
Floors
  • Construction type (slab, timber, waffle pods) and insulation details are entered.
  • Relevant factors such as floor coverings, underlays, and adjacency to unconditioned spaces or carparks impact energy performance.
  • Slab thickness, thermal bridging, and reflective membranes are all specified according to building documentation.
Walls
  • Assessors detail wall construction (material, insulation), internal/external finishes, colour, and thermal properties.
  • Walls are adjacent to neighbouring dwellings or spaces, which can alter thermal modelling and compliance outcomes.
Windows
  • Every window is modelled by frame type, size, opening style, placement, and glass specifications.
  • Orientation and shading features (e.g., eaves, neighbouring buildings, protected trees) are factored in, along with insect screens.
Ceilings & Roofs
  • Roofing material, colour (solar absorptance), insulation type, and ceiling structure are analysed.
  • Skylights, recessed lights, and ventilation are also considered for accurate thermal modelling.
Shading & Eaves
  • Fixed shading (eaves, pergolas, balconies) and vertical features (tall neighbours, retaining walls) are modelled to capture shading effects.
  • Only significant shading features impacting the rating are included, prioritised for their thermal impact.
